New Dance Day
We had a lot of fun last week trying not one, but two new dances.
BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE!!!!
Join us next Tuesday, September 25th, to learn Cshebogar, a Hungarian/Roma dance.
To get a preview on YouTube, click here or here or here. The choreography does not exactly match any of the videos, so we may just end up coming up with our own, Yellowknife, spin on it.

The benefits of dance
CBC's The Passionate Eye has a new documentary this week on aging. One of the aspects they looked at was the effect of dancing on the elderly. The study found that dancing was better at building muscle strength than a conventional gym workout.
The study was small, but continues a trend in research that shows that dancing is not just fun -- it is really good for us too.
For an abstract of the study, click here: http://www.physoc.org/proceedings/abstract/Proc%20Physiol%20Soc%2035PC31

Chicken Dance
No, we did not dance the Chicken Dance tonight, but we did talk about it.
To follow up on the conversation, according to Wikipedia, the Chicken Dance was originally composed in Switzerland, and came to North America via Germany. Those of you who remembered the Emeralds were not far off: their recording of it was responsible for its popularity in Canada in the 1980s.

National Dance Week and International Dance Day 2018
National Dance Week is April 22-29
Celebrate with international folk dancing. We will recognize National Dance Week at our April 24th class. 7-9 pm at the Anglican Church hall.
National Dance Week is organized by the Canadian Dance Assembly.
International Dance Day is on April 29th.
International Dance Day was created by the Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute ITI, the main partner for the performing arts of UNESCO. Since its creation in 1982, the International Dance Committee and the International Theatre Institute ITI select an outstanding dance personality to write a message for International Dance Day each year. This day is a celebration day for those who can see the value and importance of the art form “dance”, and acts as a wake-up-call for governments, politicians and institutions which have not yet recognised its value to the people and to the individual and have not yet realised its potential for economic growth.
