December classes

We have two more classes coming up in December.

• Monday, December 9th - Calvary Church
• Tuesday, December 17th - Anglican Church

The class on the 17th will be one of our Old Time Party Dance classes. Bring a friend and get ready for the winter party season!

A few scheduling items to note

November is an eventful month. Here is what is coming up over the next few weeks.

Friday, November 15th - Dress rehearsal for the YK Dance Multicultural Gala.
Saturday, November 16th - Performance at the YK Dance Multicultural Gala.
Tuesday, November 19th - Dance with the Girl Guides. This will be a one-hour class.
Saturday, November 30th and Sunday, December 1st - our first ever weekend workshop

Monday, monday

Around here we like Mondays, because once every month, Monday is dance day. Join us on Monday, October 7th at the Calvary Church, where we are going to visit Bolivia and learn Carnivalito, fly back across the ocean to practice the Siege of Ennis a few more times, and then work on Khosid.

A few dates to mark in your calendar:

October 20th, 2 pm - Audition for the YK Dance Gala.
November 16th - YK Dance Gala
November 30th-December 1st - YKEFDC's own weekend dance retreat.

Voting day

Remember to vote in the Territorial election. Polls close at 8:00, but we dance until 9:00. You are welcome to join us even if the lines at the poll booths are long and you are running late.

October 1st

Our next class is on October 1st. We are going to continue to work on The Siege of Ennis and Khosid. We will also have time for some other dances from our repertoire. So come prepared to suggest some of your favourites.

Annual General Meeting

Last class of the season

Tuesday is our last class for this year. Don't miss it! We had a lot of fun last week reviewing the dances that we learned throughout the year.

Bhangra update

Due to unforeseen circumstances, we will not be teaching Bhangra at Tuesday night's class. Instead, we will be holding a regular class focused on learning our repertoire dances.

The drop-in fee on Tuesday will be $10.

April Bhangra

The April Bhangra Class is coming up. Join us on Tuesday, April 30th, for another fun filled class. Bring your running shoes!

Drop-in fee for this class is $15.

We will be celebrating National Dance Week again this year. Join us for a celebration of dance on April 23rd at the Anglican Church.

Some people look forward to a three paycheque month. At the Yellowknife Elders Dance Collective, we look forward to a five dance night month. That's right, there are five Tuesdays in April.

Bhangra night in Yellowknife

That's right, we are having another Bhangra class this month. Join us on Tuesday, March 26th for Bhangra.

We will have a guest instructor that night, so the drop-in fee will be $15.

There will be no extra charge for anyone who has paid the annual membership fee.

It's warming up

It's warming up outside but we are still indoors heating up the dance floor. Join us on Tuesday the 19th at the Anglican Church for our next class.

Updates on the dance schedule

We are going to be working on our original choreography, Khosid Wedding Dances, for the next few weeks.

We have a couple more videos to help you get ready for Tuesday's class.

We will be holding more Bhangra classes in the next few months as well. Join us for Bhangra on March 26th, April 30th, and May 28th. The drop in fee for the Bhangra classes will be $15. Annual members can participate in the Bhangra classes at no extra charge.

We are working on plans to host another Get Active event on March 9th. We will keep you posted as we get closer to the event.

Dance Tuesday

Dance Tuesday is coming up tomorrow. Join us at the Anglican Church on February 19th for some more dancing fun. Get out and keep warm.

Recap

Last week we worked on Khosid and made it about half way through the fast part. Here is a sample of one of the steps we were working on. It was supposed to be in slow motion, but somehow that didn't work out and the video is at full speed.

Exciting news

We have some exciting news. We have another guest instructor coming February 11th, this time to teach us the dances of the Uyghurs.

In the meantime, we have a fun class planned for next Tuesday, January 29th. See you there!

Blue Monday

Several years ago, a British travel agency declared the third Monday in January as blue Monday -- supposedly the saddest day of the year. This was a publicity stunt but people have rolled with it ever since.

But, it doesn't have to be that way. Today may be Blue Monday, but tomorrow is Dance Tuesday!

Don't dwell on today. Look ahead to tomorrow!

Mid January Class

Our next class lands right smack dab in the middle of January -- tomorrow, January 15th. We will be at the Anglican Church Basement. See you there from 7:00-9:00 pm.

We will be holding our second party dance class on Monday, January 7th, at the Calvary Church, from 7-9 pm. Join us as we review:

We may be able to include a little Bhangra as well, for variety.
